Oil Painting - "Misty Morning Paddle form Orca Island"

"Misty Morning Paddle from Orca Island" 11" x 14"
Oil on panel.  SOLD

My Alaskan summer is soon to be over.  We have been busy with guests at our rental cabins in Humpy Cove since early May.  I have managed to paint only a small number of new paintings while out there this year and this is one of them.  We have had many misty mornings with low hanging mist drifting in and out of view around the mountain tops.  The mountains in this painting are also islands that we see in the distance from our property in Humpy Cove, Alaska.

"Telling A Story"

12" x 16" Oil on canvas.  Available

I very much enjoy watching Yupik dancers with their gentle rhythms and fluid movements.  This lovely lady is holding dance fans made of woven grass, beads and polar bear fur.

Oil Painting - "Humpy Cove View"

11" x 14" Oil on Canvas. Available

This is one of the lovely views that can be seen in Humpy Cove Resurrection Bay.  I painted this piece in August as a study for a commission painting.  We have neighbors in the cove where our rental cabins are and this is a portion of the view they look out to.   Fox Island is the large island in the distance.

Thank you for viewing my art.

Oil Painting - "Fall Bouquet"

16" x 12" Oil on panel.  Available here.

It has been so long since I have blogged that I had a little trouble remembering how.  That is not a good sign.  I have had a lot of distractions but art and painting is always for most on my mind even if I don't have time to put pen to paper.  I do have a few new paintings to start sharing.  This painting of a bouquet of sunflowers and mountain ash was painted in September.  I saw the sunflowers in the grocery store and the mountain ash I cut from a tree right outside me house.   The leaves on the tree soon turned completely yellow and now they have mostly blow off with the fall breezes.   I loved painting this fresh bouquet.

Oil Painting - "Out of the Water"

8" x10" Oil on panel, available.

I had such a fun day yesterday plein air painting with new friends form a painting group in Anchorage that came to Seward for the weekend.  We met up in the morning then we went all over town to find locations to paint. We had light sprinkling of rain for part of the morning but not too bad to have to stop.  Myself and several others spent the day in an old boat yard with very large boats on dry dock waiting repair.  The breeze was blowing all day with the temperature at 54 which felt like 45!  We met up again for a great dinner at a local restaurant.  It was so good to spend the day with fellow artists.

Oil Painting "Afternoon at Sea - Alaska"

12" x 12" Oil on panel.  Available.

It's spring and I'm starting my almost daily trips out to Orca Island Cabins once again.  Mountains meeting the sea is the primary view on my way to and from our cabins.  This past weekend I was there with friends cleaning cabins of cobwebs and where possible, giving every inch a shine.  In two weeks time our first guests for the summer will arrive.  This painting was actually painted last fall after the summer.  It will soon be hanging for sale in the little gallery on the island.

Thank you for viewing my blog!

Oil Painting "Winter Alley - Seward, AK"

Oil Painting on canvas 30" x 40"

Here is one of my newest paintings that I have completed recently.  I enjoyed painting this very much because it is a subject that I love.  I drive around our little seaside town and I am in awe at the beauty of Mt. Alice and Resurrection bay in the background of all the everyday small town buildings, cars, oil tanks etc.  This painting will be in my upcoming show on May 6, 2016 at Resurrect Art Gallery.

Charcoal drawing - Natasha

Charcoal drawing on Stathmore paper.

I  have been unintentionally gone from my blog a very long time.  It is not because I have not been working but my work has taken a bit of a shift.  I have been doing more drawing lately and I have also done a few larger paintings that simply take more time.  This drawing of my friend Natasha is the type of drawing  I am trying to do more of.  It is a very good skill to be able to draw a portrait effectively.  By drawing a portrait which must be very exact I am improving my hand, eye coordination.  Drawing is the foundation to any painting and the more I can improve my drawing skill I will also improve my painting.  If I draw a tree and it looks like a tree I still have plenty of fudge room in the drawing.  As long as it looks like a tree it looks accurate.  But if I am drawing someone's portrait there is much less wiggle room for me.  This is what can really helps me to improve.

Valentine's Day Give Away - "Shades of Pink"

Oil on panel 8" x 10"  $375

Here is the final flower painting for this year's Valentine's Day Give Away.   I thank all of you sincerely for following this blog and for the commits that you have posted.  I have heard from a few people that they have had trouble leaving a commit.  I don't know why the comments don't always post.  I am sorry if you had trouble with that.  Also, I have been asked if a painting could be purchased before the drawing date?  Yes, if you wanted to purchase so as not to take a chance on the winner picking a particular painting you could purchase before the drawing on February 14.

My next post will include the email address of the winner.  All of those who have left a comment will have additional entries for each of their comments.  Now..... back to the studio for me.

Valentine's Day Give Away - "White Bouquet"

Oil painting 8" x 10" $350

Here are three white roses that I was able to pick form outside rose bushes.  I really loved how the sunlight was coming through the peddles of the roses.

Valentine's Day Give Away - "Sweetheart Red"

Oil on panel 8" x 10" $375
Painting #4 in the Valentine's Day Give Away.  Leave a comment for an extra entry in the drawing!

Two weeks ago I was visiting my sister in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  We went for long walks and trail hikes in the foot hills and had a wonderful time in the state where I was born.   While I was there I bought these roses at Trader Joe's and painted one afternoon.  She has two new kittens so I had to take extra precautions to make sure they didn't get into the oil paints.  They are very curious and they want to explore everything.  I'm certain they would have landed on my pallet of oil paints had I let them in the room.  Here is a photo of Pearl and Loki as they sleep off one of their afternoon exploits.  They are very good at looking like angels when they sleep!

Valentine's Day Give Away - "Red and White Roses"

Oil on panel 8" x 10"  $375

Here is painting #2 for the Valentine's Day Give Away.   I actually clipped these flowers myself from a rose garden while I was out of state on a trip.  What a treat to have them in my room and be able to paint them while traveling.  The panel they are painted on is called gessobord by Ampersand.  These boards have a smooth surface with just a slight texture.  I am using these for all my small paintings right now because I really like them.  I brought a selection of them back in my suitcase.

Thank you for following my blog, and feel free to leave me a comment.  Every time you leave a comment you get an extra entry for the Valentine's Day Give Away!!  And I love hearing from you!

Hello, hello.... it has been a long time!   A lot has happened since September but I'm happy to be posting again!  What a better way to start than with a painting give away!  That's right it is February and this will be the fourth year that I have posted oil paintings of flowers and then given one away on Valentine's Day.  All you have to do to be eligible for the drawing is to be signed up to receive my blog in your email.  To sign up you must put your email address in the open field on my blog, once you have summited it and filled out a spam quiz you will then be sent an email asking you if you indeed want to receive my blog.  The final step is to click on the link in that email to confirm that you want to receive the email.  This year I am adding another way to be entered into the drawing.  If you leave a commit on any of the new flower painting posts I will also enter you into the drawing and if you are already receiving the emails you will get an extra entry just for leaving the comment!

So, here is the first painting that will be part of the Valentine's Day give away!  All of the flower paintings are painted form live bouquets or still life set ups.  I hope you enjoy them!

Oil Painting - "Sunflowers With Lemon"

12" x 12" Oil on canvas.

I picked up these sunflowers in the grocery store about two weeks ago and I have really been enjoying them.   What a delight they have been with their smiling faces.  I threw in the tomato and lemon just to add to the composition.  Fall is everywhere here and now a bit of rain has set in.  I'm guessing when the clouds lift there will be fresh snow on the mountain tops.

Oil Painting - "View From South Deck"

8" x 10" Oil on canvas.  Available here.

This was painted a few weeks ago on a wonderfully misty day.  The big tree in the foreground is very old and weathered.  I have wanted to paint it for a long time now.  Lately we have been having very sunny days but high winds making painting outside impossible.  The winds finally died down today.

Thanks for following my blog.

Oil Painting - "Photo Opportunity"

8"x10" Oil one panel.  Available.

Right at the end of downtown Seward, AK I saw this man sitting on a rock taking pictures.  The wind was blowing off the ocean and the sun was bright.  I liked the brightness of the scene and the strong sunlight.  Lowell Pt. is the land form in the near distance.

Thanks for viewing my art!

Rainy with High Tide

Oil on canvas 9"x12" SOLD

We had a week of rain and heavy clouds and now we are having a fabulous week of clear skies and warm temperatures.  It has been wonderful.  On one of those rainy evenings around 8:00 PM I painted this scene.  Looking out of my studio/gallery located in the cove I can see this scene.  It was so wet that I took several photos and used them as reference too.
