A Rose For You

I have enjoyed painting these roses though their soft petals and subtle color changes are not easy to paint.   Unfortunately the photo on this one is not too good.  Looks like I have reflecting light on it but it is too late now for me to take more photos and post.   In Portland, Oregon there is a wonderful public rose garden that I have visited a few times.  The rose garden is very large and has rows and rows of every kind of rose.  There are all sizes and colors and you can walk along and smell them and view the delicate beauty of each variety.   Here in Alaska we grow Sitka Roses.  I should remember to paint them this summer when they are in bloom.  I have two different verities in my yard.

A crisp winter day with low winter light, ….. just the kind of scene that really catches my eye.   The two houses on the left are across form our local post office.    The views are so powerful here that taking a simple drive to retrieve the mail can be woefully humbling to me.     If I can just capture a bit of what I see and feel I would be happy.

Dramatic views are pretty much a standard around this town but I thought this particular one was surely worthy of the title.    This street is lined with houses whose occupants see this fabulous view on a daily basis.  The changes in light, clouds and colors are beyond imagination.  I have to say,  I am grateful to live where I can see such beauty.

This is Cody, my sisters dear cat who passed on last year after a long and happy life in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  The background design is from the rug on my sister's living room floor.   I am really enjoying painting these pets.  My cat Coco is curled up next to me right now in full support.

A friend saw my dog portraits posted on Facebook and asked me to paint her husband's dog.  This is Luka who passed away a few years ago.  I am glad to be able to paint this for them.   The portrait was a birthday gift for her husband.  

Salty Dog

This is a portrait of our dear pet Salty who passed on about 6 years ago.   He was a golden retriever mix that we rescued from the pound when he was 2 years old.  We absolutely loved this dog.  He made a wonderful family pet for our 3 boys as they grew from elementary school through high school.  We will never forget this special dog.

I have been wanting to paint some of my favorite pet friends and here is my first one.  Meet Charlie, a sweet and loving blue healer and pit bull mix.  Charlie was a pound dog when my oldest son and his wife picked him up about eight months ago.   Now he gets lots of loving attention, home cooked salmon dinners and daily walks in the woods.   We are glad to have you around Charlie and I'm glad to have finally painted the first of hopefully many pet portraits.

 This is a painting of the late afternoon light falling on buildings along the park strip in downtown Anchorage.  The view is from 10^th Avenue looking east toward the Chugach Mountains.   I have donated this painting to the Art Showcase Auction at Alaska Public Media KAKM - TV.  The art action will take place live on television February 6 - 8, 7 -10 p.m.  All proceeds go to the nonprofit Alaska Public Media.  I love PBS!

    This young visitor from California caught a salmon and was washing it off in a tidal pool by our cabins.   He eventually cleaned it so he, his brother and parents could enjoy it for dinner.   

Rainy Day Paddle

This painting is of a honeymoon couple who came to the island.  It was a day of heavy rain and I decided to paddle with them over to the waterfall at the other side of Humpy Cove.  We had a great time even in the rain and I have managed to paint two different paintings form that one rainy day paddle!
